Courses at The Advanced School of Journalism kicked off

On September 10, courses at the Advanced School of Journalism began. This year, it opened its doors for 17 Moldovan young men and women who for 10 months will study the standards and practices of western journalism and the way these can be applied in the Republic of Moldova.

The academic year opening ceremony took place at the new school location on 49/4 Tighina Street in the presence of trainers Vasile Botnaru (Radio Free Europe), Alexandru Cantir (Radio BBC), Alina Radu (Ziarul de Garda), Olivia Partac and Nadine Gogu (Independent Journalism Center), Nicolae Pojoga (Moldovan State University) who wished the students a lot of daring and success in mastering the chosen profession.

On the first day of school, the students also had a meeting with the former graduates of the Advanced School of Journalism: Roxana Teodorcic, Victor Gotisan, Svetlana Nejelscaia and Alexandr Reznic, who gave them advice on the learning process at school and examples of the importance of studies in the carrier of a journalist.

This year there are a number of changes in the curriculum of the Advanced School of Journalism. These are meant to improve the study process and have been coordinated with a number of experts in the field from abroad, among which: Frank van Vree (Journalism Faculty, University of Amsterdam, Holland), Richard Pernollet (Center for Professional Training of Journalists with office in Paris, France), Byron Scott (professor at the Missouri School of Journalism, the United States of America).

The new program is divided in two semesters, of which the first one contains basic notions for writing and publishing mass media material. The second part supposes specialization, internship and final project. Articles by students will be published on a number of recognized websites of the Republic of Moldova.

For the academic year of 2007-2008, 17 students were enrolled in the Advanced School of Journalism, of which 10 scholars. This year, just like last year, courses will be read by well-known trainers and journalists from the Republic of Moldova and from abroad.

The Advanced School of Journalism was launched on September 4, 2006 with the aim of preparing universal journalists for the mass media of the Republic of Moldova. The School is a project of the Independent Journalism Center in partnership with the Missouri School of Journalism (USA) and the Center for Professional Training of Journalists with office in Paris (France). The School has been also supported by the International Journalism Center in Washington, DC, Knight International Press Fellowship Program, OSCE, British Embassy in Chisinau, French Embassy in Bucharest, French Embassy in Chisinau, etc. The Project is financially supported by the MATRA Program of the Dutch Ministry of Exterior implemented through Press Now and National Endowment for Democracy (NED), USA.

The first graduates of the Advanced School of Journalism from the class of 2007 have received attendance certificates signed by the three founding institutions and now work as reporters at Radio Free Europe, Ziarul de Garda newspaper, TV7, Infotag Agency, Gagauz Television, Business Class magazine, etc...
